The Classifications of Varmam



Generally the varmam can classified as follows :

Padu varmam - 12

Thodu varmam - 96

Thattu varmam - 8

Ull varmam - 6

Nokku varmam - 1

Mayakku varmam - 12

Siddhars and experts classified severally 108 varmam in the different characteristics of the varmam. These classifications express on the base of the places, nature, characteristics and the usage of treatment of varmam.

The classification of varmam:

  1. Traumatic classification

  2. Classification on the basis of channels

  3. Classification on the basis of Aatharam

  4. Humoral classification

  5. Classification based on five elements.

  6. Numerical classification

  7. Regional classification

Clasification based on traumatic:

Varmam can be classfied into two according to the trauma occured.

  1. Padu varmam - 12

  2. Thodu varmam - 96

Total varmam - 108

  1. Padu varmam (12) :

The word “Padu” have several meanings like “to increase” ,”torture”,“to destroy” etc,. These Varmas increases sufferings and will destroy (death) finally so such name was given.. cAlso these varmam can be created by piercing with stick, strong caning, throwing some harmful things etc, this name must be given.Usually Padu varmas will afect the internal organs. These internal organs are protected by bones and muscles so only with such a force these varmam can affect a person. Padu varmam is the characteristic of bone. Through these varmams one one nadi is bis just touching on its travel path , so that also may be the name cause. Padu varmas are 12 by name and 19 by place.

  1. Thodu varmam (96) :

Thodu Varmam means varmam created by touching the varma places. Further, these varmam can be created by pressing and manipulating on the varma places. These varma also can be caused by the hand of enemies. These varmam can made through pressing, massaging piercing pointedly,tapping, lifting,attacking, and pushing.

The Thodu varma places are the junctions of muscles, nerves, veins, capillaries, arteries and bones. According to varma kuru nadi, thodu varmam have the characteristics of nerve. Each nadis touches, eight varma places. This also may be the reason these varma places are called as “Thodu Varmam” (12x8 = 96)

Classification of nadis :

Vasi otherwise the Pranan moves through 12 Nadis (channels). These 12 channels are related to the 12 Padu varmas, ie, these 12 padu varmas are considered to be the “Sub varmam” of the 12 channels.

  2. Pinkalai nadi varmam - 9

  3. Edakalai nadi varmam - 9

  4. Sinkuvai nadi varmam - 9

  5. Purudan nadi varmam - 9

  6. Kanthari nadi varmam - 9

  7. Athi nadi varmam - 9

  8. Allampudai nadi varmam - 9

  9. Sankini nadi varmam - 9

  10. Kuhu nadi varmam - 9

  11. Paisini nadi varmam - 9

  12. Visuvotharai nadi varmam - 9

Total Varmam - 108

Each nadi is related to eight thodu (12x8=96) varmam and these varmam are called as joint - varmam. Therefore each nadi is related to a padu varmam and eight thodu varmam ie, totally nine varmam.

2.12.3. Classification on the basis of Atharam

  1. Moolathara varmam 3

  2. Swathittana varmam 7

  3. Manipooraha varmam 10

  4. Anakatha varmam 41

  5. Visuththi varmam 15

  6. Aakinai varmam 32

Total varmam 108

Varma odivu murivu chara soothiram – 1200,classifies varma on thebasis of the six aatharas.Few varmam located around a particular atharams are grouped as the varmam related to that particular Atharam.

Thridosha classification:

Vatha , Pitha and Kapa are called as thridosha.. Varmam is classified also on the basis of the thridosha.

  5. Pithathontha varmam 5

2.12.5. Classification on the basis of five elements:

According to Varma Aanni Soothiram - 100, the Varma points are classified on the based on the five elements

  1. Prithivi varmam 36

  2. Appu varmam 15

  3. Theyu varmam 32

  4. Vayu varmam 13

  5. Aakaya varmam 12

Total varmam 108

2.12.6. Numerical classification:

According to Agasthiar Varma Sari – 205, the varma points are classified on the numerical basis as two. Each varmam is included under any one of these two.

  1. Odd varmam 48

  2. Even varmam 60

2.12.7. Regional classification:

The human body is divided into 5 regions. The varma points situated on these places are classified based on those regions.

Varma Beeranki – 100, Varma Kannadi – 500 and Varma Lada Soothiram – 300 classified the varma points on the basis of regions.

  2. Varmas from neck to the naval 45

  3. Varmas from naval to Anus 9

  4. Varmas on the hands 14

  5. Varmas on the legs 15
